Party wall agreements for neighbours

The party wall agreement is your main protection while the house next door is being built. Understanding it helps you spot problems early and get them put right.

Three things worth knowing

  1. You can choose your own surveyor, and the neighbour doing the work normally pays their reasonable fees.
  2. Your home is recorded before work starts, in a schedule of condition that any later damage is measured against.
  3. You have 14 days to appeal an award you disagree with, so read it as soon as it arrives.

If a notice has only just arrived, start with our companion guide on replying to a notice.

Guides for neighbours

Has a notice landed on your doormat?

Ivan Larkin can read it through with you, explain your choices and act as your surveyor. In most cases the owner doing the work pays for that.
